- LASU chapter announced that they received the information on the strike rather late
- Activities on the campus therefore continued as normal, but this would end on Wednesday August 16
As at Monday, August 14, activities were continuing as normal on the campus of the Lagos State University (LASU) despite the announcement of the nationwide indefinite strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).The LASU chapter of the union, had yet to fully comply with the strike action. Dr Isaac Oyewunmi, who is the chairman of the chapter said in Lagos that they received the information on the strike rather late.
According to NAN, Oyewunmi said the executive members of the chapter would meet later on Monday, August 14 and a congress would be summoned for Wednesday, to officially declare the strike in the university.
He said: “The strike has began as directed by the ASUU national body because it is not optional, but we just want to tidy up one or two things before complying fully.
“Be assured that by Wednesday after our congress, the chapter will comply 100 per cent as directed and it will be total, comprehensive and indefinite."He also explained that Monday and Tuesday, August 14 and 15 will be used to notify the university management of the strike, as expected.
Meanwhile, activities in the campus were normal as a t the time of this report.
According to a statement signed by Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU president, the union explored all means of negotiation before the decision to embark on an indefinite strike action was reached.The statement said in part: "The national executive council (NEC) of ASUU met at the university of Abuja main campus, Giri, on the 12th of August 2017 to consider the results of a referendum from all branches in a bid to ascertain ways of convincing government to implement outstanding aspects of the 2009 agreement and MoU of 2013."
